What is a Sankey Diagram?

A Sankey diagram is a flow diagram where the width of each arrow is proportional to the quantity flowing through it. Named after Irish engineer Matthew Henry Phineas Riall Sankey, these charts are used to visualize energy transfers, material flows, budget allocations, website traffic, and process flows. Also called alluvial diagrams or Sankey flow charts.
